Frequently Asked Questions

Will acupuncture hurt? Are there any side effects? How does it work?

Acupuncture treatments are known for their minimal side effects, which may include minor bruising, itching, or redness at the needle insertion site. These effects are usually temporary and last for only a few days. The sterile, single-use, non-medicated, and disposable acupuncture needles used are incredibly thin, often compared to 2-3 strands of hair, making the insertion process generally pain-free. Patients may experience sensations like heaviness, dullness, tingling, or electrical impulses after the needles are inserted, which are considered normal reactions to treatment.

What will my first session be like?

During the initial consultation, expect the process to be lengthier as a thorough health intake will be conducted, including discussions about health history and tongue/pulse diagnosis. Afterwards, a personalized treatment plan will be presented based on your specific condition and health issues, prior to commencing with the actual treatment session. This structured approach ensures that the treatment is tailored to address your individual needs effectively.

How should I prepare for my session?

It is recommended to eat a light meal a few hours before acupuncture and to stay hydrated to avoid feeling light-headed during the session. Avoid alcohol consumption before treatment. Refrain from brushing your tongue or consuming staining foods/beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, or blueberries 2-4 hours before the session as it can impact tongue diagnosis. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for better access to acupuncture points on the torso, legs, and arms.

Can I get acupuncture if I'm pregnant? Is it safe?

Yes you may! During pregnancy, certain acupuncture points are avoided to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby. Common concerns that pregnant individuals seek acupuncture treatment for include morning sickness, stress, constipation, pain (especially in the hips, lower back, and shoulders), gestational diabetes, and swelling. By addressing these issues, acupuncture can provide relief and support for pregnant individuals while minimizing any risks associated with treatment.

Is everyone a good candidate for treatment?

Absolutely! Acupuncture can help support many health issues and a wide range of conditions. It is a powerful preventative medicine to help support overall wellness for those who don’t have any major health issues. Even for those with initial needle concerns, acclimation to acupuncture can be achieved over time, particularly with the guidance of the right practitioner who can create a comforting and effective treatment experience.
